A Stitch in TimeTim Etchells

A simple phrase with many different meanings was positioned above the Rosemount Shirt Factory in huge letters, recalling the industry that once made Derry~Londonderry the shirt-making capital of the world.

Tim Etchells’ new commission for Lumiere Derry-Londonderry was a 23-metre long and 2-metre high artwork of steel letters adorned with hundreds of LED bulbs. Speaking out to the rest of the city, the words that lit the night sky read: ‘A STITCH IN TIME’. For Etchells, just a few words are enough to start something. His work often comprises of incomplete text, highlighting differing meanings within words.

Etchells’ designs installations to change how an audience experiences a city, using language to encourage them to think differently about the place they are in and what the possibilities there might be. His work is accessible, often comical, and engaging.

Tim Etchells is an artist and a writer based in the UK whose work shifts between visual art, performance and fiction. He has worked in a wide variety of contexts, notably as the leader of the world-renowned Sheffield-based performance group Forced Entertainment. He is currently Professor of Performance & Writing at Lancaster University.
