St Oswald’s Church
12 neon birdhouses accompanied by a soundtrack of birdsong
Tweets of birds performed by human voices fill the churchyard with delicate melodies. Hidden amongst the trees, the luminous birdhouses invoke the need for protection from the harsh winter ahead, while the birdsong is the herald of the coming spring, bringing with it thoughts of renewal and of easier times ahead.
Sanctuary was commissioned as part of the Lumiere Durham 2013
BRILLIANT competition for anyone originally from or currently living in the North East with a bright idea for a light installation. Since then
Sanctuary has been exhibited in Crown Hart Gardens at Lumiere London 2016. Sarah Blood also created Dissect I and Dissect II for Lumiere London 2016.
About Sarah Blood
Sarah Blood’s work is inspired by natural phenomena, science, geometric abstraction and post-minimalist sensibilities. Her primary medium is light, which she explores through glass, luminous gases and mixed media, creating sophisticated and elegant works. Sarah’s works have been exhibited throughout the world including Europe, the UEA and the USA.

Approach from New Elvet has a steep incline. The front entrance to the church has tarmac paths of adequate width.
