Commissioned by Garage Museum of Contemporary Art for Art Experiment 2013 (Moscow).
An interactive sculpture built from 6,000 incandescent light bulbs.
This playful installation invited viewers to draw closer, touch the art, and engage in a collaborative performative experience by tugging on pull chains to activate “lightning” on the surface of the cloud. Celebrating the power of collective action and re-imagining everyday objects, as the incandescent light bulb is phased out in the EU and countries around the world, the sculpture took on new meaning as a beacon of shifting technologies. CLOUD reminded us of the moment we switch from one technology to another and asked us to imagine what might come next.
Artist duo Caitlind r.c. Brown and Wayne Garrett (Calgary, Canada) work with a variety of mediums and materials, ranging from artificial light to re-appropriated architectural debris. Beckoning viewers with interactive contexts and novel materials, their projects invite strangers to share in experiential moments. Mass-produced objects are often used to reference cities as immeasurable masses of materials, people, and situations, evoking the possibility of renewed understanding through a minute shift in perspective. Previous works have appeared at: Garage Museum of Contemporary Art (Moscow, Russia), Pera Museum (Istanbul, Turkey), Whanki Museum (Seoul, South Korea), I Light Marina Bay (Singapore), GLOW Forum of Light + Architecture (Eindhoven, Netherlands), and elsewhere.
