Keeping the Home Fires Burning

Posted 11/16/2019

A photo story celebrating the return of Compagnie Carabosse’s Spirit to Durham.

Having originally appeared at Lumiere 2011, the internationally-renowned French street theatre company, Carabosse, bring their fire alchemy back to Durham Cathedral for Lumiere 2019. They invite you to follow them on an elemental journey that celebrates community, warmth, and the timelessness of human needs.

Celebrating the power of fire to draw people together in warmth and community, the return of Carabosse’s Spirit to the 10th anniversary edition of Lumiere is generously supported by Tolent Homes. Rooted firmly in the North East, Tolent is dedicated to ‘creating great spaces to live and work, and positively impacting those communities where we operate and live’.

Evoking County Durham’s proud heritage, miners’ vests are suspended as if floating upwards into the eaves of the Cathedral’s nave as visitors of all ages enjoy the atmosphere.

Leading the audience on an illuminated trail in and around Durham Cathedral, Spirit evokes the journeys taken by pilgrims hundreds of years ago.

Scrap metal, charcoal, and even cast-off clothing was used to construct mechanical fire pits and rust-brown metal branches to hang meshed metal orbs from on College Green.
