Location: Prebends Bridge
An invitation to pause, look up for a moment and dream
Cédric Le Borgne’s simple yet evocative sculptures glowed from the rooftops of the South Bailey in the first ever Lumiere in Durham in 2009. Now he returns with The River, a series of three giant koi carp, suspended above Prebends Bridge. At once majestic and wild, they contemplate, explore and caress the world. Confronted by these spectacular creatures of mythological proportions, for a fleeting moment, the viewer faces a nature they thought had been domesticated. They are an invitation to pause under tall trees and experience an unexpected feeling at a bend in the road.
It is the artist’s precision with the placement of the sculptures and how they are lit, that bring a special living quality to the work, enabling a profound human connection with the natural world and revealing the poetry of daily life.
Born in Paris in 1972, Cédric Le Borgne lives and works in Toulouse. After studying Applied Arts at l’Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan, he made his first work in 1997 exhbited in the Mix’Art Myrys cultural squat in Toulouse. During this period he also travelled widely, from the high plains of Pamir to the borders of Tierra del Fuego. He discovered the richness and diversity of the world, landscapes, Persian architecture, civilizations, encounters, brotherhood.
Free of the formal constraints of art, his work invites everyone to view the quotidian in a new way, and to dream.
