A tiny moment of joy, a glance, a glimmer

Glimmer seeks to give the viewer a glance into the lives of the Durham community. Working with 400 community members from across County Durham, Artichoke and a team of facilitators ran workshops which produced hundreds of decorated lanterns. Each lantern contains a message, a memory, a hope or a truth to be carried away.

This project takes its inspiration from Solace, a new commission for Lumiere 2025 by artist Amelia Kosminsky, which is made up of hundreds of lanterns suspended in time in the Cloisters of Durham Cathedral.

Glimmer brings together voices from groups of all ages and backgrounds: from primary schools to professional quilt makers, mental health charities to the local crafty coffee mornings. The piece offers the viewer a tiny moment of joy, a glance, a glimmer into the lives of the community around them.
