Grove of Oaks

RMS Design (Northern Ireland)

LUMIERE DERRY-LONDONDERRY 2013

Trees made of electro luminescent wire arching overhead and responding to the audiences’ movements.

Inspired by the meaning of the word ‘Derry’ (derived from the Gaelic from ‘oak grove’), RMS Design’s installation was a series of interactive trees in Craft Village. Multiple, interlacing branches of fine green filaments of light arch overhead, lacing in a way that evokes a Celtic knot work design that pulses as people move beneath and through the installation.

RMS Design consists of husband and wife team Russell and Monica Smallwood. Monica was born in Derry-Londonderry, and they have both lived and worked there since 1999. Russell and Monica both trained in Primary Education. Monica now teaches at a local Primary School and Russell works as a smallholder.

Grove of Oaks was originally commissioned as part of the Lumiere Derry-Londonderry 2013 BRILLIANT competition for anyone based in or originally from the Northern Ireland with a bright idea for an installation.
