Heart of the City – A Place for the People

Speirs + Major (UK)

LUMIERE DURHAM 2009

A living portrait of the city created by Britain’s leading lighting artchitects.

Specially commissioned to mark Durham’s City of Culture bid, A Place for the People explored the characters that give the city its unique identity, creating a portrait of a vibrant place to live.

Local photographer Steven Landles captured portraits of over 100 Durham residents aged between five months and 97 years old. The images were projected onto buildings in Market Place, accompanied with a soundtrack of the city’s life by Newcastle-based sound engineer John Howes.

Speirs + Major is a UK lighting design practice originally founded by Jonathan Speirs (1958-2012) and Mark Major in 1993. Both credited with helping to raise awareness of the profession in the UK, the company has lit numerous well-known buildings including Heathrow Terminal 5, 30 St Mary Axe (The Gherkin), the Millennium Dome and St Paul’s Cathedral.

This piece was created by Mark Major, Clementine Rodgers, Christopher Beasley and Lee Sweetman.
