LUMIERE DURHAM 2009

Neon words which catch the viewer off-guard with their immediate intimacy.

Three of Tim Etchell’s neon signs were positioned in the city during Lumiere Durham 2009. Each used seemingly inconsequential phrases.

Etchells is an artist and writer based in the UK whose work shifts between visual art, performance and fiction. His pieces often explore rules and systems within language and culture as well as concealment, construction and deconstruction. He has worked in a wide variety of contexts, notably as the leader of the world-renowned performance group Forced Entertainment. He is currently Professor of Performance & Writing at Lancaster University.

The other installations in this trio of works at Lumiere Durham 2009 were Please Come Back and Wait Here I Have Gone To Get Help.

Across the range of my work I use strong, simple, sometimes comical means to get to serious ideas. I’m drawn both to the speed, clarity and vividness with which language communicates narrative, image and ideas, and at the same time to its amazing propensity to create a rich field of uncertainty and ambiguity
