Park benches with a difference.
Lightbench transforms the concept of public seating, encouraging passers-by to take the weight of their feet and strike up a conversation with a stranger. Lit by hundreds of LEDs, the Lightbenches on Durham’s riverside and in London’s Mayfair will be permanent installations for both cities.
Bernd Spiecker’s produced his first bench in 1982 using acrylic material. He has since developed the idea of Lightbench, seeing them as symbols of recreation. He plans to build 100 across the world in the hope that they will bring people together.
