More Noise

Tim Etchells (UK)

Lumiere London 2016

Artichoke’s Director Helen Marriage curated an exhibition of Tim Etchells’ work at the Bloomberg SPACE.

The exhibition comprised of three of Etchells’ neon works: MORE NOISEMirror Pieces and Let’s Pretend.

The collection was centred on a new piece by the artist MORE NOISE, 14 scattered and interconnected neon phrases which each read ‘MORE NOISE’ and ‘THAN SIGNAL’. Each was displayed with a hint of disorder, brightly coloured at floor level. It invoked the idea of sound, playing on Etchells’ interest in the relation between pattern, order, disorder, sense and nonsense. Alongside this work, are two more of Etchells’ pieces, which interacted with and reflected some of the themes of the new work.

Tim Etchells is an artist and a writer based in the UK whose work shifts between visual art, performance and fiction. Across the range of my work I use strong, simple, sometimes comical means to get to serious ideas. I’m drawn both to the speed, clarity and vividness with which language communicates narrative, image and ideas, and at the same time to its amazing propensity to create a rich field of uncertainty and ambiguity.
