Lantern Company with Jo Pocock (UK)

LUMIERE LONDON 2018

A wild garden in the heart of the city.

Leading UK artist Jo Pocock and the Lantern Company turned Leicester Square Gardens into an illuminated world.

The luminous secret garden played with the relationship between wild spaces and urban city life, as this busy area was transformed into a space for quiet reflection and a gathering place to celebrate the beautiful and wild.

The Lantern Company has a wealth of experience in producing and directing arts festivals, one-off site-specific events, carnival parades and visual theatre. It also undertakes sculptural commissions and creates processional kinetic floats, costumes and large-scale puppets.

At the heart of the company lies the desire to nurture and promote artistic excellence alongside a commitment to developing sustainable projects, which build skills and raise aspirations in community members, increasing confidence, celebrating creativity and promoting social cohesion amongst participants and audiences alike. Lantern Company events aim to be accessible to those who may not normally access visual or performing arts.

Lanterns from this work were transferred to the Thornton Heath light festival, supported by London Borough of Croydon.

The Lantern Company’s other installation for Lumiere London 2018 was called Flamingo Flyway, in Chinatown.
