33. PLANETOÏDS

Pitaya (FRANCE)

Location: South Bailey

The galaxy comes to Durham in this immersive, hypnotic journey of floating stars.

Suspended above the historic South Bailey, the cobbled pathway will be lit with a host of floating hand-sculpted planets refracting light and movement. First exhibited in Lyon during the Fête des lumières in 2021 and 2022, PLANETOÏDS will illuminate the shadows with a dynamic sequence of colourful light creating a hypnotic and dream-like experience.

About Pitaya

French creative studio Pitaya was founded in 2006 by David Lesort and Arnaud Giroud. In 2006, Pitaya designed thirty massive chandeliers above the visitors for their first exhibition in Lyon during the Fête des lumières. Since then, the duo has been lighting up public spaces, a real open-air showcase, by combining technical skills and an artistic vision.

Starting from research and experimentation, Pitaya has become a laboratory and imagines concepts and objects to tell places and stories. With this approach, they anchor the public within a territory and its environment in order to weave a strong link between people and nature.

By approaching light as a versatile material, they design light objects with multiple styles and innovative forms. Pitaya collaborates with local partners and their creations are manufactured in France with technical expertise. Pitaya productions have been exhibited worldwide in Paris, Tokyo, London, Dubai, Moscow, Shanghai, New York, Geneva, and Singapore.
