Hilary Sleiman, Lesley Bond (Northern Ireland)

LUMIERE DERRY-LONDONDERRY 2013

A series of ghostly shirts in the windows of an old factory to pay tribute to the city’s once vital shirt-making industry.

In days gone by Derry-Londonderry was a centre of shirt-making, with dozens of shirt factories scattered around the city. Hilary Sleiman and Lesley Bond’s piece at the old Sinclair Factory, ‘Fabric World’ on Abercorn Road arose from a desire to pay homage to the building and the industry. While researching Derry’s shirt-making history, Lesley said she uncovered familial links to the city’s factories which made the project even more meaningful.

Shirts was originally commissioned as part of the Lumiere Derry-Londonderry 2013 BRILLIANT competition for anyone based in or originally from the Northern Ireland with a bright idea for an installation.
