BRILLIANT Installation

Stained Glass Car

Twist Design (UK)

LUMIERE DURHAM 2013, 2015

These unique Stained Glass Cars were made from re-claimed Robin Reliants.

Brought to life with interior lighting, the cars depicted the heritage of Durham and the North East. Borne from an obsession with fusing seemingly incompatible elements to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary, the marriage of traditional stained glass and salvaged Reliant Robin vehicles formed the basis of an unexpected visual feast that could not fail to put a smile on your face.

There were Stained Glass Cars at each of the Park and Rides in Sniperly, Howlands and Belmont.

This piece was created by Twist Design, which was then made up of Stuart Langley and Matt Sayle. Stuart has since left the company to forge a career as a full time artist. One Stained Glass Car returned to Lumiere Durham 2015 where his installation Wave was also part of the programme.

Stained Glass Car was one of four installations commissioned as part of the Lumiere Durham 2013 BRILLIANT competition for anyone based in or originally from the North East with a bright idea for an installation.
